My name is Gabby and I am a 5th year Monash University student. I moved to Melbourne 5 years ago from the small country town of Yackandandah (north-eastern Victoria).

At first I was unsure if a law degree was really for me. I was torn between what I thought lawyers were supposed to represent and what societies perceptions of being a lawyer meant (money focused, winning at all costs and more money). In the end, I decided to take on the stressors and challenges of law school, as I thought the high level of analytical thinking, written and oral communication, and collaboration with peers would provide me with a skill set that is transferable to a range of career opportunities.

What those numerous opportunities were, I was uncertain, but I was positive a law degree could open many doors. It was with this knowledge that the idea for “Humans of Monash Law” came to our Law Ambassador group. By researching and interviewing Monash law graduates, I have had the opportunity to make some exciting new connections, learn about a diverse range of career possibilities and to feel connected to the legal profession whilst discussing similar experiences and struggles with alumni.

The common trend of advice I have been given is, to be bold, back yourself and say yes to opportunities that interest you. Sometimes your dream job is not what you imagine it to be, but one day you will say yes to something that you fall in love with. So, in the meantime, I plan to try many different experiences that look interesting and hope that I have some fun along the way.
