What year will you graduate from Monash Law?

2018 is my final year of university.

How did skills learnt through your degree help you with your current position?

At a basic level, sitting on a Board demands competency of corporate governance. So I      actually ended up using a lot of my skills and knowledge in Corporations Law to understand my duties as a director and obligations to the organisation. My degree has allowed me to think in a 'risk' mindset which empowers me to consider the risk of liability, however that presents itself.

What do you do at the radio station and how long have you been working there?

At SYN, I sit on the Board as Chair of Risk and Compliance, this means I consider all compliance issues for the organisation, from employee contracts to our obligations as a youth organisation with a duty of care to young people. Additionally, I think about strategy around reputational risk and how its best resolved. Recently I have been appointed to Vice President. In this position, I have to consider strategy more broadly and the direction of the organisation, through setting and tracking a strategic plan.

What are the most satisfying aspects of your position?

The most satisfying aspect of my position is working closely with people who are very passionate about the organisation and the impact it delivers. It's easy to get excited about an organisation when everyone you work with is so passionate!

Tips for current students on following what they want to do?

If you've always considered yourself passionate about areas outside of the law, consider how the skills that you have developed can impact and deliver value in those areas. Literally just Google the intersection between your passions and the law and find opportunities, whether paid or unpaid. Once you start understanding the industry and your connections grow, opportunities present themselves.

How you coped with failure at law school?

I think if you have passions outside of law school, and are working hard at them, a bad grade is a blip on the radar in the scheme of all the other things you are doing and are excited about. For me, working in radio and playing music with my band was always a huge stress reliever. There's no way I could have got through law school if I only focussed on law school - it would have placed so much pressure on myself to do well, and failure would have hurt so much more!

How did you find your passions?

Trial and error. I've never been the one to know what I've wanted to do from day 1. I ended up in law school after a process of elimination. Similarly, my passions have been founded from the same; through a process of trying everything and finding the things I'm excited about. Doesn't matter how long it takes to get find what makes you click, there's no pressure. Also allow your passions to change, and don't be trapped into pursuing them because you've been pursuing them for a long time. Interests change and what you're passionate about today might be different tomorrow.
